Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES)

Founded in 2012
Secretariat: Bonn (Germany)

Introduction: Nature's Contributions to People

Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an intergovernmental body that assesses the state of knowledge about biodiversity , ecosystem services , and nature's contributions to people (NCP) . It has significantly raised awareness of biodiversity loss–a serious global issue–and has helped encourage actions aimed at addressing it. IPBES plays a role similar to that of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) ; therefore, it is sometimes referred to as the "IPCC for biodiversity."

Since its establishment in 2012, IPBES has conducted scientific assessments of biodiversity, publicized the state of biodiversity loss, emphasized the importance of conservation, and provided highly-reliable data along with scientific evidence to encourage policy decisions and concrete action. These findings serve as the foundation for decision-making, policymaking, and action at all levels and scales.
